Southern Italy throughout the ages has been a stomping ground for a wide array of different cultures. The Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Normans, Germans, French and Spanish have all battled over this region in the hopes to access its trade ports and flourishing farm lands. With all these different cultures flowing through the country; Southern Italy has become a melting pot of flavors and cuisines from those who have left their mark. However, impoverished by war and drawing from those different cultures, the people of Southern Italy improvised to make their simple dishes elegant, delicious and long lasting. The regions of Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia provide bountiful rich spices including oregano, cumin and fennel as well as an abundance of seafood and lush vegetables that make the whole of their dishes. At Peno, we stick to our Italian roots while also leaving our own mark as so many before us, embodying the “soul” of Southern Italy. Savor the experience of the new southern Italian soul food.
LOVED everything about it The owner/ chef was warm and wonderful. The staff was SO nice and The FOOD was incredIble. The octopus appetizer!! The seafood pAsta. Even the chicken was elevated! Everything is made from scrath in house and the portions are huge. We felt like we were in Manhattan or Naples. Can't wait to go again and again.
This is hands-down the best restaurant in St. Louis. It's the only restaurant I have been to where I am able to get a different meal each time and love each one no less than the one before. I even think the boyfriend and I have fallen in love all over again over the course of our shared meals at Peno.. it's just that kind of place. Pepe is an amazing host. On one visit I had this absolutely incredible stuffed trout. As I was gushing to our server about it, I mentioned that the heat of the shishitos, which they had grown locally (all the produce is), was particularly delightful. On our way out at the end of the night, Pepe stopped me with a bag full of the shishitos, fresh tomatoes, and their delicious homemade bread. He then told us a quick bread salad recipe we could make with it. That's the kind of above-and-beyond that makes Peno one of a kind and a place we LOVE showing anyone that's willing to go with us!
Incredible, creative, delishessly balanced food. Handmade pastas galore combined with rich broths and savory stocks arrive steamy with unique ingredients and killer flavors. Nightly specials based on seasonal meats fish and produce. The pizza is spot on with tons of available ingredients and a yummy house made crust. Homade desserts! Great staff cool vibe, Pepe is there most evenings. Make a reservation.
The food was incredible! The fresh bread served before the meal is hot and wonderful.The Italian salad is similar to a Pasta House salad. The beet salad is served with a wonderful pistachio crusted goat cheese. The seared scallops (5!!) was served with roasted veggies. I wanted to eat all of my husband's white bean cassoulet. The godfather cake was a wonderful chocolate cake large enough for 3 of us to share.The menu is written on a chalkboard (bring you glasses is you get seated far away). There are no descriptions, so get comfortable asking the waitress for a description of each on. There are no prices listed, so expect a surprise at the end.
